 馬遠村受她精神感召，全村戒酒

       不過，醫病、濟貧幫助的只是個人；民國四、五十年代，山地衛生環境極差，居
   民缺乏衛生習慣，常就地排便，使得寄生蟲疾病四處橫生，結核病菌也漫天飛揚。魏
   海蓮心想，惟有從改善環境衛生和公共衛教著手，才能收事半功倍之效。於是，她捲
   起衣袖，帶領醫院護理部社區保健科的一群弱女子，在山地挖排水溝、建公廁和垃圾
   處理處，而且向國外親朋好友籌募結核病、寄生蟲、改善家戶環境衛生和家庭計劃基
   金。當她發現，酗酒是造成原住民極高意外傷害比率和家庭困境的主因時，她利用每
   個星期天和休假日，上山和牧師、村里幹事，共同推動戒酒運動，希望藉上帝的力量
   幫助原住民戒酒，花蓮馬遠村民因受她精神感召，因此全村戒了酒，村民並利用省下
   的買酒錢，蓋了一座教堂。

   　　魏海蓮並率先於民國六十二年，在花蓮開辦居家照顧服務，幫助出院後半身癱瘓
   、需放置導尿管或胃管的病人居家護理；民國七十年，她成立了國內第一個戒酒無名
   會，提供酒癮家庭輔導諮商。看到火車上有人吸菸，她一定找出吸菸者，百般規勸吸
   菸有害健康，講到對方停止抽煙才罷休；同桌有人飲酒，也總少不了挨魏護士一頓勸
   告。

   　  魏海蓮將所有的時間和有限的生活費，都貢獻給上帝和病人，自己卻兩袖清風。
   家中除了冰箱、床、椅，別無長物；醫院幾個同事收到她回國時所轉送的物品，才發
   現魏護士平日使用且珍視的「寶貝」，在外人眼裡，根本是早該丟棄的破舊物品，髮
   梳梳齒早已斷落大半，電扇也老舊得幾乎吹不動，床單則是美援麵粉袋改製而成。而
   且她盡量廢物利用，化腐朽為神奇，將破絲襪編成腳踏墊給醫院使用，將碎布改縫成
   棉被，讓醫院不得溫飽的孩童覆蓋，或者是收集泡綿，作成靠墊，送給臥病在家的病

   　　畢竟天公疼好人，當年魏護士揮別男友，來到地球的另一端奉獻三十多年，如今
   她自醫院退休，垂垂老矣，上帝也為她安排好老伴。繼同在門諾醫院奉獻數十年，並
   獲得上屆醫療奉獻獎的外籍護士馬素珊之後，年長幾歲的魏海蓮也決定和加拿大一名
   相識已久的教友，於民國八十三年七月成婚，圓了人生夢。在人生往後的歲月裡，結
   合兩人的心力，攜手繼續為當地的孤貧服務。當年受她照顧的同僚、病人、朋友，對
   魏護士有一個這樣的「結局」，除了有說不出的意外，也準備在她這次回國領取醫療
   奉獻獎時，向她獻上滿心的祝福。
